How to lose belly fat — the honest truth
No shortcuts, no spot reduction myths — just what actually works and realistic timelines.
There's no way to lose fat from just your belly. Fat loss happens across your whole body through a sustained calorie deficit combined with strength training and adequate protein. Belly fat is often the last to go and the first to appear, which is normal, not a sign you're doing something wrong.
Belly fat is the most searched fitness topic in the world — and also the most misunderstood. A thousand ab exercises won't target belly fat specifically. Here's what genuinely works, based on how fat loss actually happens in the body.
Myths — busted
What actually works
A consistent, moderate calorie deficit. Eating slightly less than your body burns, sustained over weeks and months, is the only proven mechanism for fat loss. A deficit of 300–500 calories per day is sustainable and effective without being extreme.
Strength training 3–4 times a week. This preserves muscle mass during fat loss, which keeps your body composition looking leaner and your metabolism functioning well, rather than just losing weight that includes muscle.
Adequate protein intake. Around 1.6–2.2g per kg of bodyweight supports muscle preservation during a deficit — see our protein guide for exact numbers based on your weight.
Consistency over intensity. Sustainable, moderate changes maintained for months produce far better results than extreme short-term diets that are impossible to sustain and often lead to regaining the weight.
Realistic timeline
Visible changes in the midsection typically take 8–12 weeks of consistent effort for most people, and belly fat is often the last area to show noticeable change even when fat loss is happening elsewhere in the body first. This is normal and related to genetics, not effort level.
