Quick Answer

The biggest gym contract red flags are: no cancellation clause, automatic renewal without clear notice, long lock-ins with no trial period, and vague refund terms. Read the full contract before signing — never rely on verbal promises from sales staff.

Gym sign-up moments are designed to move fast — excitement, a good deal, pressure to commit today. This is exactly when contract terms get overlooked. Here's what to check before you sign.

The red flags — watch for these

🚩
No written cancellation clause
If the contract doesn't clearly state how and when you can cancel, assume it will be difficult. Insist on seeing this in writing before signing anything.
🚩
Automatic renewal without clear notice period
Some contracts auto-renew annually unless you cancel within a narrow window (sometimes just days) before the renewal date — easy to miss and costly if you do.
🚩
Long lock-in with no trial period offered
Being pushed toward a 12-month commitment without a trial first is a sign the gym is more confident in closing the sale than in you liking the actual experience.
🚩
Vague or no refund policy for unused months
If the contract doesn't specify what happens to unused months if you need to cancel early (medical reasons, relocation), ask directly and get the answer in writing.
🚩
Hidden fees not disclosed upfront
Maintenance fees, locker fees, or "facility charges" added after you've committed are a red flag. All costs should be disclosed clearly before you sign.
🚩
Sales staff makes verbal promises not reflected in writing
"Don't worry, you can cancel anytime" means nothing if the contract says otherwise. Only what's written and signed is enforceable — verbal reassurances aren't.

Before you sign anything

Read the entire contract, not just the pricing section. Cancellation terms, renewal clauses, and fee structures are often in smaller print further down the document.

Ask for a copy to review at home. A legitimate gym won't pressure you to sign on the spot without time to review. If they do, treat that pressure itself as a red flag.

Get everything in writing. If a salesperson promises something not in the contract, ask them to add it in writing or note it clearly — verbal promises are unenforceable if a dispute arises.
