GST on gym membership — explained
Do you pay tax on your gym subscription? What members and gym owners need to know.
Gym and fitness services in India attract 18% GST when charged by a GST-registered business. Many small neighbourhood gyms fall below the GST registration turnover threshold and don't charge GST — larger gyms and chains typically do, shown as a separate line item on your invoice.
Whether your gym membership includes GST depends on whether the gym itself is registered under GST — which in turn depends on its annual turnover. This surprises many members who assume all businesses automatically charge tax.
For gym members
| Scenario | GST charged? | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Small neighbourhood gym (below threshold) | Usually no | Not GST-registered; price you pay is the full amount, no tax added |
| Registered gym / chain | Yes — 18% | GST added on top of the base membership price, shown on invoice |
| Corporate wellness / franchise gym | Yes — 18% | Almost always GST-registered given business scale |
For gym owners
GST registration is required once your annual turnover crosses the applicable threshold under India's GST law (currently ₹20 lakh for most states, ₹10 lakh for special category states, for service providers). Below this, registration is optional.
If registered, you must charge and remit 18% GST on gym membership fees and personal training services. This applies to monthly, quarterly, and annual membership plans equally.
Input tax credit is available on GST paid for gym equipment, rent (if applicable), and other business expenses — reducing your effective tax burden if you're registered and filing correctly.
